Importance of gynaecological health
A woman’s body constantly changes as she grows older. At every critical stage of her life it is vital that gynaecological, sexual and reproductive health is monitored to ensure a long, happy and problem-free life.

Gynaecologists/obstetricians are specialists in the identification of disorders associated with women’s reproductive systems, the care of pregnant women and the treatment gynaecological problems. It is vital that women have regular gynaecological examinations to ensure that they are in good health and to identify any potential disorders that can be treated before they become severe.

Gynaecological conditions
Almost every woman will be affected by a gynaecological condition or infection during her lifetime. Clearly some are more severe than others, but it is important that you have regular gynaecological check-ups to ensure you are in good health.

Critical monitoring
Like a breast scan, a gynaecological check up can prove to be an effective early warning system against the spread of cancer. According to US Health Department statistics cancer of the endometrium is the most common cancer of the female reproductive system with 40,000 cases diagnosed every year. Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer in women with 25,000 American cases diagnosed in 2005.

Cervical cancer is now claiming fewer lives than ever before thanks to the increased prevalence of Pap screenings although it is estimated that 12,200 cases will have be diagnosed in the US in 2005.

Gynaecological screening is also used to identify serious problems caused by transmitted infection such as Chlamydia, endometriosis and other pelvic inflammatory diseases. The importance of treating these diseases cannot be underestimated. For example, according to the US Health Department, 40 per cent of women with Chlamydia develop pelvic inflammatory disease with 20 per cent of these people becoming infertile.
